Sari Mäkiö

Finland

My name is Sari Mäkiö, a 37‑year‑old dog enthusiast from Paimio, Finland. I qualified as an FCI conformation judge in 2023, having completed the most recent judging course. My main breed is the Whippet, and I also own a Chinese Crested Dog. My first introduction to Whippets and sighthounds dates back to the early 2000s. I acquired my first Whippet in 2001, and since then Whippets have always been part of my life. During my childhood, my family owned Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and we had one Cavalier litter in 1996. Dogs have therefore been a constant presence throughout my life, and in adulthood my passion for dogs has developed into a fulfilling way of life. At present, I live with two Whippets, one of which is from my most recent litter born last year. I was granted the kennel name Avantina in 2013, and my first Avantina litter was born in 2015. I breed on a limited basis and have had a total of seven litters to date. My breeding has produced national and international champions, and several of my dogs have also earned working titles in lure coursing. I have imported dogs from Italy, Norway and the United States and my puppies have been exported to Italy, Sweden, Israel and the United States.
I am qualified to judge all breeds in FCI Group 10 and I have expansion rights for FCI Group 9. In addition to judging in Finland, I have officiated at shows in Sweden and Norway. Outside the world of dogs, I work in senior management within a private healthcare services group. When time allows alongside dog‑related activities and my children’s hobbies, I enjoy gardening and other relaxing pursuits. I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to judge at the legendary Messari, and especially to celebrating my birthday surrounded by lovely sighthound puppies.
