Health and welfare of dogs at dog shows

Please note that the welfare and health of dogs is always a priority at dog shows, and the exhibitor is responsible for the welfare of his or her dog.

A dog show in an indoor hall with lots of other dogs can be a stressful place for your dog, especially if your dog is at a dog show for the very first time. Whether your dog is a first-timer or a more experienced show dog, always remember to take good care of your dog during the show!

The day at the dog show runs smoothly when your dog is used to other dogs and crowds of people, and when you have trained with your dog on what is expected of him in the ring and how the judge will examine your dog during judging.

If your dog is shy or aggressive, you should seriously consider if a dog show is the right place for your dog. A bad show experience can make your dog even more shy or aggressive. An aggressive dog can even constitute a danger for other dogs and people at the show.

Take it easy with your dog during the show

Ota rennosti koiran kanssa

Avoid having to hurry and remember to relax with your dog during the day. Enjoy the moment – it’s more than just a competition. It’s about spending time together with your dog.

Ensure a smooth day for everyone by respecting the space of others

Pidä etäisyyttä muihin koiriin

Remember to keep enough distance to other dogs. By respecting the personal space of others, we make sure that the day runs smoothly for everyone.

Reserve a large enough place for your dog to rest in

Koiralle tarpeeksi iso häkki

Make sure to reserve a place for your dog to rest that is spacious enough. If your dog has a crate, make sure that it is large enough. A spacious crate offers a safe and comfortable space for your dog to relax and rest up in during the show day. Do not leave your dog alone in the crate for long periods of time.

Walk your dog outside during the show

Ulkoiluta koiraasi näyttelypäivän aikana

Quiet moments outside help your dog to show himself refreshed and happy in the ring. There are several outing areas at the show, these have been marked on the map over Dog Fair Finland.

If your dog has a long day at the show ahead of him, you can leave the area with dog your and come back by showing the dog's ring number.

Gentle handling of your dog ensures it a pleasant experience from the ring

Nosta koira kauniisti pöydälle

If your dog is of a breed that is shown on the table, make sure to lift your dog on and off the table by supporting its whole body, not by lifting it by holding its neck and tail. Make also sure that your dog does not fall off the table by accident. Treat your dog with kindness during judging. A dog that shows himself in a happy manner is the centre of attention.

A dog must not under any circumstances be treated roughly!

Showing your dog on a loose lead is a result of smooth teamwork

Esitä koira löysällä hihnalla

Please show your dog on a loose lead at the show. Do not pull or lift your dog from the lead. A loose lead is a sign of seamless cooperation between the dog and its handler, towards the best possible performance.

Dog Welfare Counsellors guide exhibitors on how to take the dog’s well-being into consideration

This year, Dog Welfare Counsellors go round the halls at Dog Fair Finland to observe how exhibitors take care of their dogs’ well-being at the event. Dog Welfare Counsellors are Kennel Counsellors trained by the Finnish Kennel Club. They advise and guide exhibitors, and, if necessary, also intervene in situations where the dog’s welfare is at risk. They can award Canine Companionship rosettes when they meet exhibitors whose dogs seem to have had a fun, stress-free day at the show.

Attempting to influence a dog’s performance artificically at the show is forbidden

Attempting to influence a dog’s performance by using any chemical substances, drugs or treatments is forbidden. For instance, dyeing a dog’s fur, skin and nose as well as treating the fur with chemical substances that affect the quality of hair or the shape of the fur is prohibited. An exhibitor committing a violation of these rules will be excluded from the show.
