Judge
Dogs have always been an important part of my life. In my childhood home, dogs were taken to both shows and working trials. However, working traits were always prioritised. I’ve learned about utility trials with a German Shepherd, a Small Münsterlander taught me the secrets of bird hunting, and a Schipperke was our family’s first actual pet dog, since there were no rats nearby to catch. Both my grandfathers were hunters, of course with traditional Finnish breeds, the Finnish Spitz and Karelian Bear Dog, as their aid.
I got my first Afghan Hound in the early 70’s. My Afghans competed both in racing and in shows. Along with them, I was soaked up by the show world for good, even though I had gone to dog shows for several years with my parents’ dogs. Soon, my own team of dogs grew with a Tibetan Terrier. I bred Tibetan Terriers from the late 70’s to the mid 90's, after which I bred a few litters of Tibetan Spaniels. My latest litter was a litter of Cairn Terriers a few years back.
I became a judge in 1982 and was first authorized to judge Tibetan Terrier and Tibetan Spaniel. The Sighthound group was my first complete group. Over the years, the number of breeds grew, and I finally became an all-breed judge in 2017.
Even though my family and career have required a lot of time, I’ve been actively involved in local dog club activities, show committees, and the activities of my kennel district. I also educate judges for some breeds and organize educational events and trials in Northern Finland.
Dog shows have always been an important and dear hobby of mine. I spend most weekends at dog shows around the world, mostly however within a decent flight distance from my home. Sometimes I of course also make longer trips. Whether I am at a dog show in Finland or abroad, it is always interesting to meet new people and experience new cultural environments through our mutual friend – the dog.
The first time I judged at the Winner Shows was 35 years ago, in 1987. I'm happy and honoured to once again get to judge at the world’s best show in my home country!
